Stopped by Bass Pro Shop today for a few bullets and to check powder. They tend to be a little high priced but they did have some Power Pistol so I grabbed two pounds. Didn't have the 147 XTP's I wanted. I just have to have a look at the revolvers whenever I'm there but the prices always seem high. Today though, they had the gun I have been looking for, A 686 4" six shot. It was marked "close-out" at $649.88. Had to have a closer look at that price. Straight barrel, excellent carry-up on all 6, tight b/c gap, no scratches and perfect crown, barrel and forcing cone. I'll take it!

Now it gets even better. They are having some sort of "second amendment sale" where they discount the amount of the sales tax (8.25% here) on guns. An additional 10% off the first purchase if you get their credit card, which I did. Total for the gun came to $584.90 out the door. It was originally marked at $809 +tax.

Got out the bright light, a magnifier and the feeler gauges when I got home. That tight b/c gap turned out to be even all the way around. A .005" wouldn't fit and a .004" fit with no friction so figure a gap of about .0045". It's going to be shot tomorrow. I'll post here how that goes.

That's awesome. I got a similar deal with a LGS recently and really like the trigger feel... smooth and crisp. Happy shooting!

Took it to the range this afternoon. 140 hand loads of several types of 357 and 38 special, mostly jacked, shot well. The sight needed only two clicks left and four clicks down to get in the bullseye. Bench resting gave some best groups of 7/8" at 15 yards and 1 7/8" at 25 yards, pretty good for my old eyes. The best load was 110 XTP's in .38 cases with 7.0 gr. of Power pistol. Gun cleaned up easily and no leading seen after a quick bore brushing.

Considering leaving this gun all stock. The factory grips work well for me and the double action is about as light and smooth as a factory gun gets. Having done some minor action polishing and re-springing on most of my other Smiths, having a simple shooter that will reliably fire CCI magnum primers double action will be nice. I'm really pleased with this gun. Having it function so well, with no problems and getting an uncommonly good deal on it makes this a really good experience.

My 4" 686 is the last handgun I will ever give up. It shoots and carrys great, and shoots several different handloads very good.
