Greetings all,

As username shows, I'm Kevin and I'm from NJ. New here, but not new to firearms or S&W in general. I am newer to revolvers, which is one reason I've registered here, after lurking on and off for several years.

I'm in the market for a revolver, for various reasons, besides my Heritage .22LR. I absolutely want one that's better quality. The Heritage is fine for what it is at the price point, but I want something nicer. I've decided on S&W, Ruger or an older Colt. I've read too much about Colt quality problems. Yes, all mfg will ship a dud. The key is how often and how they handle it.

I have much homework to do first though. As well as try to get my hands on some. My copy of S&W Standard Catalogue 4th Edition is scheduled to be delivered today. I anticipate that and you fine folks here with much more knowledge on the subject then me will aid me in my selection.

I'm open to new or used, except Colt. I'm leaning slightly towards used in S&W just out of principle with the Hillary hole. As with anything, price will be a factor. I'm looking for a 3" .357/.38 Special. I think they will fit the intended purpose.

Welcome aboard

I'm new here myself but there's a load of good info here.

Welcome to the campfire.

Look for one of these:

3" S&W M686+

2.5" S&W M686+

2.5" Ruger Security Six (never mind the stocks)

None of those are super easy to find but I can recommend all three.

2.5" Model 19s or 66s should be in your ballpark, too - but, like hens' teeth, hard to find.

Are you looking for cowboy action or something else? I only ask because you referenced Heritage and .22 LR. I was a semi auto guy until I started shooting my dad's smith revolvers. For work no, but on the range yes. Self defense...maybe. On a nightstand, for sure. If you define what you want it for the smart guys will chime in.

Welcome from Maryland.

I love 3” K frames myself. I have nine now. Blue Model 547, 10, and 13 nickel Model 10 and 13, stainless Model 64, 65 LadySmith and 66. And a re-imported Aussie square butt Model 10 that’s been ceracoted. I think a blue 3” Model 19 is among the most beautiful of all revolvers, but damned hard to find and expensive.

2 1/2” Model 19s or 66s are nice too, easier to find and generally less expensive. I have a blue 19, nickel 19 and the stainless 66.
