Passed through a number of times while researching snub nosed 38's. Attempted to find a Colt or S&W vintage to 1946 thru 1964 which was the period my wife's father was City Marshal for the small city of Sedgwick, Kansas. A State Trooper friend of my wife's made this plaque to honor her father's service. I thought I'd take it to the next step by filling that holster she found in his stuff.
Turns out the holster must not be his duty rig because a 38 "snub nose" described by relatives doesn't fit. Must be a holster for a 32 or 22. In the meantime I thought I'd won on GB a period piece. The S/N 904773 indicates it was built around 1942. Auction description was a model 1905 in rare nickel with pearl grips and even rarer 2" barrel. Couldn't understand why I won it at a really good price until I posted pictures on another S&W forum.
I'm told it is a "Pre-V" British Service Issue, most likely 4" or 5" cut down to 2". Originally blue redone in nickel. And 38S&W bored out to 38 Special. If so, it is a very good plating job.
I've ordered some reproduction "stocks" to replace the pearl and I'll just enjoy the weapon, even if it isn't authentic. Your thoughts on its heritage are invited as I don't plan on investing in a factory letter.
