Who knows what the thread pitch & diameter is on the grip screws for S&W factory stocks-- specifically for the j-frame magnas? I snagged a set the other day but unfortunately no grip screw. Bought some screw-less ones in the past too. The screw doesn't seem to match up with anything-- maybe it's an oddball diameter like a #5? I think I retapped that last set for 4-40 & bought a brass screw. I went for 6-32 with this set but that was a bad choice-- I had to drill out the LH grip for clearance plus turn down the screw head.
And please don't tell me to buy one from Numrich-- the list price is $6, plus they're out of stock anyway.

J-Frame factory wood stocks can be either 4-44 or 5-44 depending on when made. Either is an N.S. thread, which you are not going to find at the hardware store.

Just recently I have been through the J frame screw dilemma, older J frames usually use a really skinny 3-48 size, newer J frames from the early 70's to 90's use the 5-44 size, 5-44 screws are usually available on ebay, the length is 7/8 inch under the head. I only found 1 source for the 3-48 size,Joe Hulett in Traverse City,[email protected], I think he makes them himself. They are almost impossible to find anywhere else. Good luck.

Some time ago, I latched onto a pretty nice set of RB j-frame diamond magnas. They didn't come with a screw, so I tried the screw from another (later) set of magnas but it was too big. The 3-48 vs 5-44 information sheds some light on that.

Just did some googling- Brownell's website lists both 3-48 x 1" and 5-44 x 1" fillister-head screws.$6 for a 12-pack. Theu don't specify but it looks like they have a blue or black finish.
