I bought a weapon on GB and the guy in South Carolina wants to charge me sales tax....I'm in Arizona. I've bought tons of stuff on line including weapons and never paid sales tax unless I was in the same state as the seller. Here is a blip from the listing...

Payment Methods Money Order / Certified Check, PayPal, See Item Description
Sales Tax Seller must collect sales tax from the following states: SC 0.07%
Shipping Buyer pays actual shipping costs for the following option(s): 3 Day
No international shipments.
See Item Description.

Am I off base here or is the guy out of his mind?? Thanks for any replys.

0.07% is a few cents on a $100 purchase. Pay it then call the SC comptroller's office and turn him in.

contact the seller and let him/her know that you do not reside in SC. if they persist contact GB and file a complaint.

Just explain to him that you are not a resident of SC.
There is no reason he should be charging you tax.

I've done this and he told me to do what I want to do but he ain't shipping the weapon until I pay the tax. In this particular case the total tax he wants to charge is $42 plus change?? I have filed a complaint to GB but of course they take forever to reply...up to 48 hours...:(

I just wanted to make sure I wasn't out of line.

Basically, his auction terms says it all.

However, I know that with the huge amount of money being spent on internet sales some states are trying to find ways to collect sales tax. It may be possible that SC and AZ have worked out some kind of agreement for collecting sales tax.

Also, if he has an "office" or another store in your state, than he can collect sales tax.

However, as I said, his auction terms says it all and you would not be wrong for refusing to pay it.

He's a small potatos guy...doesn't even seem to have an office in SC as far as I can tell. Thanks for your input.!!;)

Post a link to the auction, since it is CLOSED. Not a problem.
That way, we can see the terms firsthand and other members know who he is.
I don't see how he can charge tax on an out-of-state sale. He may not know any better.

Good luck with this. The seller is out to lunch, but may not be able to bend to reality after staking out a hard position on the wrong side of tax law.

On the stated SC sales tax, give the guy a break. Lots of people don't understand that .07 and 7% are equivalent, and mistakenly write .07% to try to be unambiguous. I have no doubt that's what he did. If a SC resident had bought this gun and tried to enforce the letter of the printed terms and pay 42 cents of tax on a $600 gun, the buyer would be the jerk.

Seller is small time and he's mad because you bought the gun cheap. He's going to pocket the tax money is my guess.

Make out 2 checks. One for the gun payable to seller and one payable to state of SC. Bet the 2nd doesn't get cashed.

Proceed with caution

Howdy,
I'd probably drop out of the deal and look for another one.
If the seller changes the conditions of the sale and says if you don't abide by his new terms you don't get the gun, I'd say fine.
If Gunbroker sets him straight he may have hurt feelings and take it out on you somehow. (Like steal your money!)
The seller has already displayed enough warning signs and lack of feedback to make me balk.
Best of luck.

The seller just notified me he would drop the shipping charges but still was gonna charge me shipping. This hayseed said that GB poorly worded the ad ...if you read this guys e-mails you'd wonder if he ever graduated..He said GB don't pay his taxs....he does.. Anyhooooo....I told him to stick it.

GunBroker poorly worded the ad?

I've filled out the GB template a few times now.
They put in what YOU put in.......
He left you a negative which you can reply to.

I'd go find another deal - this guys a flake and I'd leave feedback to that effect.

if he states in his terms that sales tax must be collected on SC sales, then he is way off base asking for sales tax on a gun he is shipping to AZ. Az. is nowhere within the state of SC. he is trying to rip you off.

From the limited info...smells fishy to me. Unless including the $42 bucks still makes it a good/fair deal, or you REALLY want that particular piece, I'd move on.

Watch out for really high shipping fees too. A "good deal" item won at auction can become an overpayment FAST if you don't pay attention.

I buy a few things with online auctions, but from what I've seen with GB and other gun auctions sites...no way, not for me.
