Just got a safe. Was looking at the various racks and shelf hangers for my handguns. Any long time users have any problems with the coating on the holders causing a reaction with the gun materials? I have guitar stands and they recommend something to protect the finish. Thanks

I considered racks and hangers but found they used up too much space in my safe. I wasn't sold that the substance coating the hangers would stand the test of time.

I recalled Hickok45 mentioned he puts his guns in silicone impregnated wool socks before storing them in his safe. This was a good option for me because I live in humid coastal North Carolina and was concerned even though I have a Golden Rod installed.

Instead of hangers or racks, I choose SackUps (a few 5-packs from Amazon) which saved me enough room I can still buy a few more.;)

Learned in High School in wood work how to make my own racks
and also add felt to protect the surfaces.

I guess you can buy that stuff......... ?? !!

Now with poly foam and all the new stuff in the packages
that they ship stuff in, you can "Redneck" something and add some
super glue to ...............
Get er done ??

I personally store my guns in their original boxes and always wipe them down with a light coating of Rig #2 Oil and place in the VOC paper. While I do keep the original VOC paper that comes with a new gun, I routinely replace them (to actually wrap up the gun in) every few years as the protective qualities do not last forever. S&W, Brownell's, etc. sells the stuff.

Guys with massive collections or smaller safes may not have that luxury and must store their guns without the boxes, as the boxes do take up valuable space. They store the boxes separately and use racks or hangars of some sort to store them. Neither is right or wrong and they have a bunch of different store bought methods. Some guys buy materials and just make their own from Nylon Rod material, wood, plastic, or what ever.

I've seen really handy guys make pull out drawers that are felt lined and built right in to the safe. They simply lay their hand guns wight in.

What ever method you choose - just make sure your safe is dry and bolted down! ;)

For forty plus years, I have moved all my guns out of the cardboard boxes some of them came in and put them in plastic cases. I keep them in there wet with extra oil on them, not enough to cause any issues, but enough to prevent any rusting. I also toss a bag of the dessicant beads in the case. I have what I would guess is a lifetime supply of those little packets. I got them out of the new PC boxes where I used to work. I have about 50 pounds of them. This seems to work very well, as I've never seen a speck of rust on any of my guns.

I have several racks made by Versatile Rack Co that are very sturdy and have a thick coating on them for protection. I believe they make them for 4, 5, and 6 guns and there is enough space under them to lay Guns flat on the shelf.

Many different practices that work very well.
My practice is every handgun in a quality, non-vinyl zippered pistol rug. Said pistol rug's interior is heavily sprayed down with spray silicone.
A hang-tag on each rug, ID-ing what's inside.
a couple of the larger, rechargeable silica canisters (Eva-Dry/Remington, etc) are kept in the safe.

I'm surrounded by saltwater, and this seems to work fine.
