I'm looking to see if anyone has a good recommendation for a lock that fits the M&P 22. Trigger lock or a cable lock

S&W packs a cable style lock with every gun. If you did not receive one go back to the gun shop where you bought it and ask where it is. I also think that all firearms manufactures are mandated to include a lock with each firearm.

Also, any store that carries firearms supplies/accessories, will carry trigger locks. Just bear in mind that cable locks and trigger locks are EASILY defeated, so do not rely on them to prevent unauthorized access.

I got a lock, but it's a barrel lock. Crappy one I think.

Ill just have to look around. The lock will be a secondary lock which is inside my other locked case

The government said you will supply a lock with every gun. So you get a cheep china cable lock. The government didn't say that it has to be of good quality. That being said a safe is the best way to secure a firearm.

I'm thinking of getting a little single gun safe

Be sure to do some research on those little single gun safes. The electronic ones are easily defeated unless bolted down and the back is covered or inaccessible. The four-finger button ones can be defeated by a 2 yr old with a slim stick.
