Gun Smithing -- J-frame frame vice?

My "smith" is trying to remove the barrel from a Model 49, but he doesn't have a J-frame frame vice, and he's having trouble getting the barrel to "let go" and he doesn't want to torque the frame to get the barrel out.

I'd appreciate suggestions.
