US surgeon general declares gun violence a public health emergency

To drive down gun deaths, Murthy calls on the U.S. to ban automatic rifles, introduce universal background checks for purchasing guns, regulate the industry, pass laws that would restrict their use in public spaces and penalize people who fail to safely store their weapons.
………….

Murthy has published warnings about troubling health trends in American life, including social media use and loneliness. He's stayed away from issuing a similar advisory about gun violence since his 2014 confirmation as surgeon general was stalled and nearly derailed by the firearm lobby and Republicans who opposed his past statements about firearms.
Murthy ended up promising the Senate that he did “not intend to use my office as surgeon general as a bully pulpit on gun control

OK, I'm picky, but didn't the NFA regulate automatic rifles?

Yeah, I know it's probably intentional to confuse full auto with self loading.

I don't think you are being picky at all. NFA was passed to disarm the criminals like Nelson, Dillinger, Bonnie and Clyde and countless others who were using Thompsons, BAR, and other full-auto weapons in the conduct of their bank robbing and cop-killing business. So many government officials still confuse the terms when comparing semi-auto sporting rifles to the full-auto counterparts.

Concerning the universal background checks ........ How many hours have some of you waited to get an answer when your FFL inputs your name and info in the system ? And later in the day when all the time zones are doing it , it's even slower . I'm lucky , I have a concealed weapon permit and I used to have a TS/extended background clearance , but still at times it's been hours . So I just go back the next day and all is good , but I'm retired . If you work , you might have to wait until Saturday and then what ? You come back the next Saturday ? All I'm saying is before they even think about this they need to fix the system in place now before overloading it with who knows how many more background checks every day .

Can you make that promise without putting one hand behind your back?

The vast majority of "gun violence" in this country is concentrated in certain cities and communities, and involves a very small subset of the American population. But talking about that particular elephant in the room is politically incorrect, and a definite career-ender for any public official who dares bring it up. So we dance around it instead, and blame inanimate objects and law abiding gun owners...

I hope savvy Americans can see through this, but after years of propagandizing by politicians and the press, I'm not so sure...
