I am looking for a good, reliable gunsmith in the Richmond, Virginia area. I asked this question in the Colt forum, because the gun of mine that needs some work is a 4" .38 Colt Diamondback, and I got one good lead (am still waiting for some contact information) and I thought I would ask here... I did a search and found a discussion about good gunsmiths in Northern Virginia but I'd prefer one closer to home.

I need someone to disassemble my revolver and do a deep cleaning and general check of the innards. It's 40 years old, I'm buying it from a friend, I don't think it's ever had a deep cleaning, and when firing ve-e-e-e-e-ery slowly double action, it has a tendency to tap primers too lightly to actually fire the round.

I did a search of this section of the forum and found a thread where someone else in Va was looking for a Gunsmith. Two recommendattions were Sandy Garrett at N. Viriginia Gunworks, Springfield and Hartfield Gunsmith at Old town Manassas

Hope this helps

Thanks, MR... they would be a bit of a drive for me, but I don't intend to need a gunsmith often, and I do not mind a couple of hours on the road if good work is at the end of the drive. I appreciate the recommendations. If no one turns up in Richmond, I will give one of these two outfits my business.

Here's a pull from when I lived at Fort Lee. Can't remember the name of the establishment, but it was across the road from the Virgina State Police HQ. It was a big police supply store and they did gunsmithing. A guy named Bob Barr did a super trigger job on my Model 24-3. He's probably gone by now, but that may be a place to start.

EDIT: Southern Police Supply on Midlothian Turnpike.

Also, give the guys at Greentop a call. Don't think they do gunsmithing, but can tell who does.

One more... Dale's Guns in Powhatan.

I know the first place - Southern Police Supply is right there on the main drag, and behind them is the shooting range, Dominion Target... thank you, ChuckS1.

I can strongly reccommend Sandy Garrett at Northern Viriginia Gunworks. He did a complete action job on a Python for me about eight years ago. Its out of this world. He may seem a little gruff. Trust me on this, he's really good and stands behind his work.

you might also chech dance's sporting goods in colonial heights and k.c.young who owns and operates blackcreek shooting range in mechanicsville...mr young actually builds rifles from the ground up

Doing a good cleaning on a Diamondback or Python is relatively simple. I take mine down every year, or so, and swamp them out.
Should take 15 to 20 minutes with the cleaning taking 10 or 15 minutes of that.

David Sams is in Cartersville, just West of Richmond. Address is 256 Columbia Road, Cartersville. He is well known as a quality gunsmith in the bullseye and IDPA crowd. Just did some action work for me and I was satisfied enough to send him my Model 27.
