We decided to have a guys' weekend at our camp in SW PA. Invited my grandson, another boy who is being raised by a single mother, and a few friends. My son and I hosted, coming up from Florida with the boys. We had a great time...the boys, one a first time shooter, shot eveything from 22 rifle to 357 magnum to sawed of 12 gauge with a 6 inch barrel ( yes, legal with the appropriate tax stamp. I did tell my son's friend, who made this abomination, that I would take a hacksaw to his nether regions if he ever got near my collection.)

The boys shot about 400 rounds of ammo, and have decided that this should be an annual event.

And took time to cut the grass and clear a downed tree from the trail. Thanks to my brother for managing the chain saw crew.

If more kids participated in events like the one you describe, I'll bet our society would be a LOT better off.
Agreed. The young man with the single mom has ASKED us to include him in our activities because he wants a male influence in his life. His mother has raised a very polite, respectful young man. But boys need men in their lives so they can understand how the male world works..

Girls, too! But I guess, judging from my daughter, anyway, they learn different things from men in different ways. One thing I have learned is to never underestimate the powers of observation of the young ladies around you. They're watching! ;)

BTW, my comments are not intended to take a thing away from mothers. I had the world's greatest Mom, and I'll always be grateful for that. Thanks, Mom!

That's a nice place you have there! Our getaway place was only about two hours, from New Brighton, Beaver County to three miles East of Canadohta Lake in Crawford County. Whatever lasting impressions you give the kids will definitely be lasting forever. My best memories are learning to shoot and then practicing by shooting bumblebees with the Marlin .22 rifle.

Yeah, back in the day when this kind of event was "the norm" our society WAS a lot better in most ways.

ABSOLUTELY. The old saying "It takes a man to TEACH a boy to BE a man!". The truth of that has never been more blatantly obvious than it is today.
