I had to have a Glock 26. Two Hundred Fifty rounds later, I traded it for a M&P Shield.

Nothing wrong with the Glock. I couldn't hold it properly. By the third shot I had to regrip.

Figure I would get a little empathy here rather than in the Glock forum.

The Shield is a nice shooting sub compact.

Welcome to the forum!
As you mentioned, they're both great handguns. I've never shot a Glock 26, but did compare a Glock 43 side-by-side at the range--with the Shield winning me over the Glock 43. I was far more accurate with the Shield, liked the trigger better and it was smoother shooting. I walked out of the store with a brand new NTS Shield that day.

There now, you don't have to feel ashamed!;)

Welcome to the forum! I had a Glock 26 used it for off duty carry. I gave it to my wife and now carry a 642 or my 40 Shield. Most of the time both. I have M&P 9c and 40c and like the 40 shield better.

man oh man!

man oh man! I have been eyeballing the shields and M&P compacts for a while now and what I've heard from people who own them is that the triggers are really good in the free states and horribly horrendous in the Liberal states such as mine(MA).
This has kept me from getting one. The MA version has a 10 lb trigger and is not fun to shoot & some have huge safety that is funny to work and just looks weird.
I am keeping my glock 26.
might get a Glock 27.
Sorry

EDC G27/43, recently shot the Shield & 45c -- love them all. Was considering one of the following: G19/23/30/36...now its a toss-up and I can't decide...you know what that means.

My Wife is going to f(*&$g kill me.

It's too bad you couldn't have rented/borrowed/tried someone at the range's G26 before laying out the cash. :(

I have a 25y/o G19, a G26 and the Shield and love each of them for different reasons. The Shield is my EDC merely because I can Front Pocket carry it in most of my pants. For IWB, the G26 conceals just a bit easier than my old original G19.

Congrats on getting (and liking) the Shield. Next time though, try to find a way to 'Try Before You Buy'. :)

As a huge fan of Glock (EDC G19 every day all day for the past 6 years) I still don't like the little 26 and 27, nor the current single stack. Also don't like the M&Pc or shield. Something about their grips is off. I can shoot them just fine but they all feel like I'm either gripping something the thickness of a straw or something that's been cut too short

I have a couple of Shield 9s and no MS. I bought the Glock 26 out of curiosity (Lots of raves by some) and I get an LE discount. I still have it but it feels like holding a short 2X4 to me. Worst ergonomics of any pistol I've ever owned or fired. Reliable and accurate as a SD pistol but__double stacks first are more difficult to conceal than single stacks.
I have other pistols. (All same manual of arms> point and fire) One of my Shields is my EDC. Not too wide, not too heavy, very accurate and reliable.
Stay Safe

I find this an interesting change. The G26/27 has a larger grip than the Shield. Personally, I find the G26 easier to hold than the small Shield and I like the M&P compact better than both of those.

I'm curious to hear your experience after shooting the Shield for a while.

Several years ago I had a 26 but could never solve the mystery of BTF (brass to the face). Had to let it go. Our son recently bought a Shield and am anxious to fire it. After the Glock, I picked up a Bersa BP9CC. Nice ergo & trigger but snappy and quite the index finger pincher (between the trigger & bottom of the guard). Current cc is my Taurus pt 111 G2. Taurus got it right with one! But I am a "Smith guy"...also have M&P fs, SD9VE, and a 39-2. These 3 are going nowhere! Can't wait to get together with my boy and do a friendly "G2 vs Shield" range comparison. Life is good!

I had a Shield 40 and loved it....always used the extended mag for a full grip.

I just picked up a G26 as a backup duty pistol. I will shoot it for the first time later this morning.

I had a Shield before and really liked it. I did rent and shoot a Glock 26 before buying. I only shot 25 rounds and thought it was a soft shooting pistol. I have a Glock 19 and love that gun. To me it seemed like a no-brainer to trade the Shield and get a 26. Lesson learned - if you buy a gun and like the gun then you keep the gun. Never should've traded the first Shield.

Absolutely nothing wrong with the G26. Perhaps some Talon grips would help with the 26. I might keep my eye out for a used 26 when I have some money.

This is my second Shield. Put 700 rounds through the first one. Never should've traded it. I do have a G19 and like it but I don't feel like that gun is about to jump out of my hand like the 26. Thought Talon grip might help.

Seems to me you immediately told us what was wrong with the Glock. Though I'm sure you meant nothing wrong mechanically.

I was a Glock fanboy for quite a few years and bought a G23 as a carry gun before they ever came out with the "sub compacts" like the G26. When they did bring them to market I took one look and noted they were as thick as my G23, and that was the dimension that gave me the most grief in trying to conceal.

In my opinion the thin profile of the Shield is its greatest asset. That and its comparatively light weight make it an easy gun to carry day in and day out.

The Compacts do seem to have mighty short grips, but the G26 is shorter I believe. So far as the Shield, I use a Pierce base plate on the 6 shot magazines to get my whole hand on the grip. It does feel skinny in the hand, though thicker than a straw ;). But I can shoot it okay and that's what counts. From my perspective, I practice with my Shield regularly, but I don't just shoot it for fun, being blessed with other guns that are more fun to shoot. The Shield is a tool and I gladly trade a bit of width in the grip that might make it feel better in the hand for easier concealment.

Interestinger and interestinger.

When I first started to get into handguns, I bought a G27. Not because I liked Glocks, but because someone had one for sale at a price I could afford. In my ignorance, I liked the design and eventually bought a G22. I thought the full size would be better, it wasn't.

I had the same issue with the G22, and to some extent the G27, that you had; it felt like it wanted to jump out of my hand. I did everything I could, but it never settled down and I ultimately sold both of them.

Later I finally got some training. I learned how to properly hold a pistol. That made all the difference. I have since bought a G19 and don't have the issues I had in the past with the gun moving as I shoot. I suspect you may have had similar issues.

I'm not trying to get you to change. If you like the Shield, then you like the Shield. I'm just relating my experience as I've grown as a shooter. I wish you well with the Shield and encourage you to practice with it a lot.

I got training before I purchased a gun. I now have several thousand rounds through several different pistols. I actually enjoyed shooting the 26 and shot it pretty good at self defense distance. I prefer the feel of the Shield. I would recommend Glock to anyone. I have a Glock 19 and it's a keeper.

Kahr PM9, Taurus PT111G2, HK P2K, Shield, Nano, Sig P239, HK P2KSK, Glock 26

Best to worst, for small 9mm carries, in my experience and opinion, all things considered.

Near the end of my LEO career ('97) Glock offered us a deep discount on the G27. Our issued gun was the G23 so I asked if command level officers (lieutenant and above) could carry the G27 once we qualified w/it. Chief said no dice, then bought one for himself and carried it w/o bothering to qualify. I passed on the "opportunity" and really have never regretted that decision.
