Has anyone else noticed that the half-moon style front sights used on pre-WWII revolvers by S&W and Colt are essentially identical?

I think that the half round front sight blade is a basic firearm addition. Not really much one can do to make it look much different. Most gun companies looked at competitor products for ideas and modifications.

Probably so, but the design points and the dimensions are very close to each other, to the extent that I believe seeing both front sights separated from the revolvers they belonged to, it would be difficult, if not impossible, to identify which sight was for which revolver. They could have come off the same production line. I did detect one very slight difference.

How were these sights attached to barrels at the S&W and Colt factories - maybe by silver soldering?

The S&W front sights are forged on the barrel.

This doesn't apply to the Colt New Service series. Their front sights look like shark fins.
