I have a couple of HE 32cal I-frames. I'm looking for a couple sets of modern made grips - don't want to screw up the originals through use. Checked various sites re: same and can't figure out if any are available. I-frame, 32cal. HE, etc don't compute in the listings far as I can tell. Any recommendations of how-to-find-some would be appreciated. (For example: everything works EXCEPT they list for J-frame). They're 1920 or earlier, I figure.

Both I-Frame and J-Frame stocks are the same except the J-Frame stocks are about 1/8" longer at the butt and overhang the bottom of an I-Frame gun. They can be shortened if you are sufficiently skilled in wood-work, otherwise they would be a mess.:D

Thanks loads for the tip. As the rationale would be "carry" gun, I could afford to screw up the look for function. Will look a bit longer then go for wharever I can find.

I and J frame grips are always the same size for the same vintage!

From 1896 to 1953 I frame rd butt grips and 1950 to 1953 J rd butt grips are the same size.

Rd butt grips for I from 1953 to 1960 and for J from 1953 to present are the same size; 1/8" longer than from before 1953. Sq butt grips are also the same size for this period.

What model .32 do you have?
pre war/Post war Transitional
Or
Improved I/Model of 1953/model 30

Or what is the serial number?

You might look for the larger target grips, or even banana grips if it's a round butt, as they should cover most of the grip frame for a more comfortable hold...;)...Ben

I-frame grips

Hondo:
Egad… I dunno. I've two of the little monsters:
Blue: sn 277878. "Plastic" grips (w/SN), 3 1/4"
Nickel: 272742. I've seen this one described as: third model, nickel, 3 1/4 inch, MOP grips (no medallion).
Helps? (I'll look up the diff between Trans and not-trans.)
Both have grips I'd not like to screw up.

Bob's Gun Parts had a listing for a bunch of aftermarket grips. You should find what you seek there. I believe those were Jay Scott brand, which was decent.
OTOH, I like the J frame target grips that enclose the grip fram to cover the slightly shorter I frame grip frame. They are available as S&W factory as well as aftermarket.
