On Oct. 13, 1775, the Continental Congress had passed a resolution establishing what is now the United States Navy with "a swift sailing vessel, to carry ten carriage guns, and a proportionable number of swivels, with eighty men, be fitted, with all possible despatch, for a cruise of three months. …"

The Navy celebrates 245 years of service, but it wasn't always such a sure thing

Yes, happy birthday to the "junior service" from that necleus of professional sea men of the United States Coast Guard, our Nations oldest continiously operational naval force, that the Navy forms around in times of war! We are glad you got in on the end of the Quasi War, and are impressed with your service, and ships, since then.

Semper Fortis, shipmates!

Happy Birthday to US!!:D:D

Well, I'm a bit late to the celebration.

Back in 1980 I floated around the Pacific for three days on the U.S.S. Kitty Hawk to watch the Navy boys control air traffic during carrier quals on a moving runway. Quite an experience. Have a Kitty Hawk pin in my shadow box and a coffee cup from the ship's store.

We docked in San Diego. That is quite a memory.

Thanks for the ride, Navy!! I never appreciated the Air Force so much before my "tour."
