If anyone knows how the old "Hard Rubber" grips were made, I'd like to know. I think they were actually made of gutta percha, a form of latex, and were probably filled with something for more durability and ease of molding, but I don't know what that filler was. I have heard variously that the filler was either sawdust of ground horn. I would also like to know exactly what the molding procedure was, and have any of the grip molds used by S&W survived (or maybe grips were obtained from outside manufacturers). Any factual information concerning original S&W grip technology would be appreciated.

You might contact Don Furr ([email protected]) about this. He has repaired gutta percha grips for me using his own molds and process. The repairs are very difficult to tell without knowing what you are looking for.
