I saw a news story yesterday about how hard seltzer has become such popular beverage that there are now shortages. One brand mentioned was White Claw. Apparently it is a canned blend of alcohol and seltzer water, available plain or in flavored varieties. Anyone tried any?

I don't quite understand how this is some new trend. I have always enjoyed making a drink using a highball glass, ice, a good liquor, and mixing with club soda or seltzer water. If I cannot find either, Perrier or Pellegrino works as well. Flavor can be added using fresh fruits. Some old bar manuals refer to this as a cocktail or highball, or simply a (liquor) & soda. I guess even old standards can made into a new trend!

It’s akin to the wine cooler craze back in the 80’s I think. You can also easily make them from wine, ginger ale and fruit juice. One of my friends worked at a TV station at the time and viewers would call in asking for the station to run the Bartles and Jaymes commercials. I don’t believe the liquor stores could keep the product on the shelf either.

Why ruin a good whisky with flavored bubbly water!!!! If you want soda - drink soda. If you want fine whisky then do so. Just my personal opinion of course and your milage may vary. ;)

The point is to have something to drink with the not-so-fine whisky. With enough soda, I can even drink Jack Daniel’s.

I'm not a fan of the White Claw brand, prefer the second leading brand, Truly. The lime is good with Mexican food when you don't have time to make a good Margarita. I get Mexican takeout from the place next to my work, go home, pop a top on a Truly and enjoy supper on my deck.

I consider it a summer (beach) drink. Another attraction is that it is only 100 calories a can. does it have staying power? Maybe a couple of years.

But considering winter is on its way here, now it is bourbon time!

Back in the mid 70's a guy from England was going to have a woman he met over to his place that night. He asked what was a good wine to serve her.
I told him get some Boone's Farm Strawberry Hill wine. Some guy came up and spoiled the fun of it though. It was good for a laugh anyway.

I am just waiting on the next craze: a prepackaged whiskey and water mix. Why go through the trouble of mixing bourbon and branch when you can buy it pre-mixed! I should send my idea to Kentwood or Ozarka water!

My wife enjoys hard seltzer and was a bit disappointed by the “craze” this summer. We came upon a large pallet sized display of White Claw yesterday and I asked her about it because I knew she tried it at a party recently.

To sum up her reply: “Meh...”

In her opinion it’s acceptable for a larger bulk purchase for a party, but she’d never buy it for herself as her own selection.

In Tennessee we let the tourists drink Jack Daniels. I've seen them even mix it with Diet Coke. Yeeeeccccchhh.

IMO Jack Daniels is way more a product of brilliant advertising and promotion than actual taste.

George Dickel is my go to sipping whiskey, either neat or 2 fingers with a single ice cube. It never gets mixed with anything other than a bit of water.
