I filed a police report... the details aren't important right now. The sherriff gave me his business card with the report # on the back. It said to request a copy through FOIA send an email in with report number. I did and today got an email stating the report was ready and I'd have to pay $10.80 to get it.

So I have to pay to get a copy of the police report that I filed?

Pretty standard stuff but that price is stiff, I think the last one I got might have been .25 cents a page.

They are covering the cost of paper, copy machine, ink, etc. but at that price it should be bound in a hard cover book.

No kidding. It's 1 page!

$9.34 for Labor for Search, Locate, Examine Record.
$0.10 for paper copies
$0.74 for Labor for Copying Material
= $10.18

Pretty much SOP this day and time. When I was a Chief I gave them to those involved for free. Once.

Rule 303

Our PD charges a flat $5 for a mailed copy of a report, no matter how many pages. Seems reasonable to me.

Same thing happened to me. Guy on a motorcycle runs a red light and broadsides me. Local PD follows the ambulance to the hospital and gives him a copy of the accident report. I have to go to the other end of town, 30 miles, and pay $5 for a copy. They didn't even want to give this guy a ticket but he admitted running the light so I guess they had to. They must have figured if he survived that accident he didn't deserve a ticket.

Try getting court transcripts.
In my old county I lived in.... Authorized copy almost $300. Unauthorized $60. I said forget that - got the unauthorized and just improvised.
Btw - I won with a non authorized copy.:D

This I can handle and makes sense. But parties not a direct party to the incident - charging seems fine to me.

Yup. Soon every road and bridge will have a toll and there will be a government meter on your toilet.

Anybody else pay a sewer tax, seems to me there's meter on my crapper already. Lately I've been getting my money's worth.

It's good to be regular. :D

Why do you need a copy of the report? Presumably your insurance company is getting a copy, so ask THEM for it. We get people come in all the time who say: "My insurance company needs a copy of the report." Seriously? How much are you paying them to insure you, having never made a claim in 5 years and they expect YOU to do their job for them?

Crash reports are $20 here and incident reports $10. I always thought the victim should at least get one copy for free.

Wow. It's actually going to cost $20.36.
You'll have to file a second one for this theft.

It may be normal, but its not right. We're already paying the administrators salary to do administrative duties, which is what this is.
Go ahead and charge .50 for paper and ink, but $10 to click on a computer file and say, "yep, there it is" and hit print copy?
