I almost checked out in 1988 when my gall bladder got super-infected. Went in the hosp for IV antibiotic on a Tues, surgery sched for Friday but was moved to Thursday AM due to a cancellation. During surgery when they lifted out the gall bladder it was about 2-3X normal size and beet red outside. Then before they got it into a tray it "exploded" or split open and according to the surgeon it was coal-black inside. It took about 45 mins to disinfect me, the OR, and the surgical team and finish the procedure. Surgeon told me the next day that I would not have made it to Friday. Spent another seven days in the hosp. on IV antibiotic until the fever broke and stayed normal for another 48 hrs.
On the bright side, the nurses told my wife that they never saw a male cholecystectomy patient recover so fast; I was up and moving the next day, gave myself a sponge bath, taking the IV pump tree for progressively longer walks and then doing laps around the hall. But I was washed-out weak for four weeks, and was off work for eight weeks.
