Helicopter Hog Hunting Video

Well, I read that HRH Prince Harry had been training with combat helos in the US.:D

Maybe he flew this one and the media has kept it from us.

On the other hand, maybe not. This doesn't impress me as being too "princely" a thing to do. But it may be necessary in some areas. The pigs are dangerous and very destructive to crops. Getting at them in those open fields may require a helicopter.

I don't think they call it hunting, I think it's called Killing! I've done it a few times and it it's a hoot. Some of the most fun I've ever had.

I saw video of them using machinguns to kill feral swine from a chopper some time ago. No it's not hunting but it is nessecary in some parts of the country. These things ruin land and crops. I guess if you we're an affected rancher/farmer you'd have no problem with it. I don't.

i ran into a guy bout a year ago at a my LGS and he owns a company that does it ( couldnt for the life of me remember the name).

But i do agree that its not REALLY hunting but down here a few hogs will demolish fields in a matter of a night. My buddies land got invaded and went to hell fast.

I agree they are a pest and a non-native (invasive) species. Also, a major threat to some endangered plant species. In central Cali, I've seen an acre roto-tilled by hogs in one night. They particularly love wild onions, and several species are listed as rare plants. They also transmit diseases, especially from livestock to wildlife and transmit alien plant species such as Russian thistle (tumbleweeds), which, in turn, carry insects that carry plant diseases such as curly-top virus (a MAJOR threat to beets, citrus, tomatoes & grapes==all big crops in Cali.)

I just view it with poisoning coyotes. Not hunting and not worth bragging about. (jmho).

kill if needed, but do it humanely...

I can understand the need. I remember seeing Coyotes hunted that way years ago out west. That was stopped, and now we have them all over the east coast. The only concern I have is the use of what was probably a 5.56/.223 weapon to do this. It seemed like many took several rounds to stop, and then they were left to die slowly. I agree with Col. Cooper, et al, that round is fine for ground hogs or smaller. Flapjack.

We do not use rifles ( most pilots here will not let you ), just shotguns with OO buckshot seems to work the best. Yes we do kill coyotes as well.

You wouldn't want to eat it, as their meat can be full of parasites..

Don't understand the negativity here. Nobody said it was hunting. It's pest control and if you think you can shoot that good from a helicopter you're dreaming. :)

Feral pigs are a problem in Hawaii, too, rooting up plants, etc. I read an article a ways back about a pest control guy who took 'em out with a bow in the suburbs of Honolulu.

But you can eat 'em. Maybe the younger ones, and of course you've got to cook them thoroughly to kill off parasites, but that is true of domestic pork as well.

"Helicopter Hog Hunting Video"

Seems like that says "hunting".

The meat can be quite good. Of course, trichinosis can be a problem if (1) you don't examine the meat (the worms can be seen in the muscles) or (2) you don't cook it. I've eaten probably over 100 wild hogs (well, parts of 'em anyways)

My helicopter shooting has been done with a dart gun.
