I just purchased my first revolver (and Smith and Wesson) and went BIG! I picked up a S&W 500 Magnum last week at the Gun Show here in KC put on by R and K gun shows.

Mechanically, the 500 I purchased seems to be in new condition. Timing and lockup checked out fine. There was no visible end shake. The only problems I can find (I don't even know if its a problem) is there is a little bit of drag on the cylinder when the muzzle is pointed up. When the cylinder is locked in place, there's a little bit of movement side to side, but not much... I'd venture a guess at less than .002. After noticing the 'side to side' movement, I did a visual inspection on the cylinder to bore alignment. There seems to be no issue there. But again, when it's locked up, there's no movement. Is that a sign the cylinder stop is going bad?

If needed I can make and post of video of what I'm talking about. Thanks for your input!

The trigger and hammer seems to have some tarnish (it could be from years of people handling it at gun shows). Is there a good thread on how to polish parts?

Welcome. Congrats on the new gun.

I'm about three hours north of you. Why didn't you tell me about this gun show?:)

LOL! They have a gun show at the KCI expo center once a month. You can check out the calendar of events, but there is one on 2/18 & 2/19. :D

Welcome! I can't be of much help to you diagnostic-wise, but I'd love to see it. Sounds like a nice one.

I thought for sure I posted a photobucket link... Here it is:

Welcome from Texas BigE. Great forum for all things S&W, have fun, learn lots, share what you know.

Good looking revolver there, might want to cut back on it's steriod use. Just a suggestion.:D
