is that a good place to read up the specific guns I'm getting?

SW40VE (not sure what year) and an early '80 Model 29-2 44 Magnum
 
The SCSW is not exactly something you sit down to "read" - it's something you study and learn from. Use it to research the guns you inherit.

Welcome to the campfire from the other side of Texas.
 
The std catalog is about like driving from Ft Stockton to Pecos
on 285 North. It'll get you there but the drive is boring.

You'd be better off doing searches here on the guns. More flavor.
And you'll learn the in's and out's of the guns from those who
use and carry them in the real world.
