I am going to bid on something on Ebay but I forgot about how this works. Say if the highest bid so far is $200 and I bid $300 towards the end but no one else bid above $200, do I get it for $205 or whatever the next increment is, or for $300? Hope that made sense.

Yep...... That's it. Yes!!!!! But if another bidder had $300.25 as his max, he will still be winning it at that moment in time.

My advice stopped at...."Say if the highest bid so far is $200 and I bid $300 towards the end but no one else bid above $200, do I get it for $205 or whatever the next increment is...?"<here!

Yes. Ebay only uses the next increment of what you bid to get you the win. I always slam the item with that in mind and I put in what I would be willing to pay if necessary. If I lose, God bless the winner! It ws worth more to him than me.

Yes, you'll get it for the next highest increment, not your maximum bid.

NO!!! It depends on what the current bidder has bid. Let's use your $200 item as an example. Now let's say that $200 bid is mine, and the bid increment for the auction is $5. I may have bid $250, but because no one else has bid, or because my bid is currently the high bid, the auction reads the minimum required "high" bid of $200. Then you put in your bid for $300. EBay will now show your bid as the highest bid - at $255, or $5 above my highest bid.

If there were no bids and the item is listed at a starting bid of $200 or if my bid was for only $200, then yes, your $300 bid would only be posted at the starting bid of $200 or at $205 to top my bid.

I was bidding on an ebay NIB computer accessory that was at $66 and $13 shipping when I went up to $67 with my bid.Within seconds I was outbid. This told me someone wanted it badly enough to run the bidding up.

I then moved on and bought the same item for a Buy It Now $90 with free expedited shipping.

The bid on one went for a final price of $93.65 plus the $13 shipping.

Ebay buyers/bidders very often are in a world of their own.

Yes, it depends on what someone else has put in as the highest they are willing to go. If they said their top price would be $340 and you put in $300 for a top bid, they would get it for $305, or next increment.

This is called "proxy bidding" and if everyone on Ebay and Gunbroker simply used and embraced it, all lives would be more pleasant.

My wife is a avid eBay bidder, but if I want something, I just look for it listed as a Buy It Now and pay for it. She likes the action, but not me. She also likes coupons, and looks for clearance racks in the store. I have to give her credit for that...she always looks for bargains and ways to save money.
