I was cleaning out one of the back bedrooms. Had a heavy duty plastic desk chair carpet protector() on the carpet.

I picked it up and it was all damp under it. There is mold on the carpet, Not black, more of a rust color, could smell the musty odor. House is A/C 10 moths of the year.

We have a carpet cleaner and used to cleaning up pet stains. Have Resolve spray and the carpet cleaner formula both are hydrogen peroxide based,

I cleaned and cleaned, tried Oxy Clean also. Got a lot of it out, and it needs to dry but Mrs Rule is not gonna be happy!

It is better but still some stains.
Went online and they say use a solution of bleach??? That scares me.

Carpet is a dense short nap nylon, poly or whatever,

It's also my gun room so I really do not want to call someone.

Any help or suggestions??

Thanks

From my experience,, it isn't what you can see, it's what you cannot see. I would pull the carpet out and replace with some flooring of your choice. Hardwood or laminate, which you can do your self. We did most of our downstairs and you would not believe what was UNDER the carpet. The dust was so fine it was unbelievable. :p. I once bought a new van and since I had to use it for work as well I laid down some clear plastic stair runner. You guessed it. Very shortly the whole floor was wet. As luck would have it I caught it in time. :(

The bleach and water solution should kill the mold. It might discolor the carpet, but the mold has and will continue to do that. I would go with the bleach solution recommended. What was it one part bleach to four parts water?

An agricultural fungicide, such as Consan Triple Action 20 would be my other recommendation. Best Price: Consan Triple Action 20 Dimethyl Benzyl Ammonium Chlorides 9% It is labeled for indoor use.

You need to make sure you kill the mold and the mold spores, so be sure the carpet pad gets a dose of whatever you use.

Thanks for the replies.

The bleach ratio varies from 1: 8 or 1:10 another says 1cup Lysol OR bleach to the carpet shampooer container (so who knows what capacity that was?)

Other options are vinegar, borax and Hydrogen peroxide.

I find the Fungicide interesting, used to use many different kinds in Horticulture work.

I cleaned it with the carpet shampoo which is Hydrogen Peroxide based. It is better but still some stubborn stains. I'll try some dilute bleach solution worst it can do is make it lighter, it is Beige now.

IMO the problem is not only the carpet but the padding and underlay as well as what has seeped into the flooring itself.

Being a RE agent and living in Florida we deal with this issue on a regular basis.

Mold has a nasty habit of getting into places nothing else can get into - it's very possible that the damage has also seeped into the dry wall near the wet spot.

If it were me I would rip up the carpet and padding and examine the bare floor for staining as well as examine the wall - you can usually hire a plumber or other contractor who has a moisture meter which will identify all the problem areas.

This could potentially be much larger than you suspect - treating a visual stain is not always the best solution as the mold could easily come back due to what is not seen

Good luck either way

My father made the same mistake when he moved to FL and into a home on slab for the first time in his life. New wool carpet and plastic chair mat did not last long before mold set in. He cut his losses and switched to tile.

You started thread with "help"
It reminds me of someone else
I can't take this seriously:D

You have a class 4 contamination.
Your only option is to amber the room!

At least you didn't use bold caps:rolleyes:

I never had a mold problem inside the house, but outside on the north side I do, in a five gallon bucket, I would use one gallon of bleach, one cup of liquid All and the rest water, works for me.
