Help Date My Model 40 Please

I have a .38 spl S&W Model 40. It is a three screw, with hand ejector, grip safety, fixed sights, and a 1 7/8" barrel. Serial number is L9439. I believe these were produced between 1971 and 1974 and I'm curious about the actual year. It is in excellent condition, and any suggestions as to a ball park value would be helpful.

Not a clue on ship date. But early 70s sounds good.
Value is dependent on cond. and goodies. $500-$600 sounds like in the range for that period. Blue or nickel?

It is a late L prefix so a 1974 production date seems likely, but they were slow sellers at the time and may not have shipped until later.
