At the local range have met a young Marine assigned to a nearby recruiting station. He's got a Ruger in 45 LC,his first gun, which he's finding ammo expensive and difficult to find. It's not a very practical 1st gun caliber but that's water over the dam.
He's a nice kid and I'd like to load up some rounds for him. Looking for casual range loads.
I've scrounged up a few hundred cases and the use of the proper dies and wonder if anyone has info on loads using PLATED BULLETS ONLY(range forbids use of lead or cast). Furthermore am looking to use Unique or Win#231.
Suggestions are welcome.
Tks,Kevin

With a 250 ~ 255g cast SWC:

8 ~ 9 grains Unique. Velocity will go from 800 to 900 fps. Interesting, eh?

7 ~ 7.5g W231 for similar results.

If the range prohibits lead or cast, that really limits your options. Most handgun bullets contain lead. What do other shooters on the range shoot?

8 grains of Unique under a 250g LRN bullet has been my normal range load for years also. Also load it up a bit to give it a bit more kick. It's such a large case make sure you don't double charge by accident.

8 grains Unique under a totally copper plated 250 grain TC or RN lead bullet works fine. The totally copper plated bullet meets the no exposed lead range requirement.

OU812's advice to be specially carefull not to double charge the .45 Colt case is a good one. Double-charging and overcharging is the single most common cause of blown-up .45 Colt guns.

Thanks for the help guys. Going up to Cabelas later and w/any luck they'll have a box of bullets available. The more popular bullets have been difficult to get but maybe the shelves haven't been stripped of .45/250gr.
