That is what you have, an early 1902. It probably shipped around September-November 1902. The U.S. Service Cartridge is the .38 Long Colt, a bit shorter than the .38 Special.

DWALT, THANKS FOR THE RESPONSE. FOUND SOME SERIAL NUMBER DATA ON ANOTHER FORUM THAT PUT MY SERIAL NUMBER IN WITH MODELS OF 1905 BUT OTHER FEATURES WERE'NT ADDING UP. DIDN'T REALLY MATTER TO ME IF IT WAS A LATER MODEL OF 1905 CUZ IT'S STILL A TIGHT VINTAGE SMITH . THANKS

The references give the .38 Model 1902 as starting at a little below SN 21000. As I said, yours is an early one. Post some pictures if you can.

Taking some pictures tomorrow ,then I' see if i can figure how to post them(darn greenhorns), Is there a thread that can show me how? Thanks for the welcome Muley, and thanks for the additional info rct269.

As to serial number, the Models of 1899, 1902, and 1905 are all in the same serial
number series, along with the Outdoorsman in .22 caliber, and a small number of
revolvers chambered in .32 Long.

The Model of 1905 is the name for the square-butt revolver; the Models of 1899 and
1902 are round-butt only. With the introduction of the Model of 1905, both the
round-butt and square-butt revolvers, which are otherwise identical to each other
except for the butt configuration, were continuously produced up until WW2, and
then also after WW2.
