I just picked up a Model 1917. I was trying to find out when it was made. It's SN on the barrel is 141xxx. It has united states property under the barrel. Sometime in the past it was nickel plated, so some of the marks are not as sharp. Any help is appreciated.

The gun's serial number is stamped on the butt. Barrels can be replaced and the number there may or not be the gun's serial number.

WWI production S&W military 1917s are in the SN range #1 thru # 169959. If yours does in fact have a SN of 141xxx, it would be from late 1918.
