I inherited this gun over 20 years ago and bumped into it again in the back of the safe. Finally decided to see if I could find info on it. It was my great great grandmothers from what I was told. Serial on the butt of the gun and cylinder are the same, 349XX. Its a top break, self ejecting gun. Here are some photos.

Hi There,

Welcome to our Group!

You have there a .32 "New Departure" Safety Hammerless First
Model. These were made from 1888 to 1909. Yours was probably
made in the early 1890's. It has been re-finished at some time
in its past (S&W didn't nickel plate the triggers or trigger guards).
To get a definite date of when it was sold, you have to ask for a
historic letter from the S&W Historical Foundation. The service
costs $100.00 per letter (if you want one).

Cheers!

refinished but still a nice heirloom

Pretty cool!

That's the first handgun I ever fired. When was 12 or 13, my buddy's grandfather had one and my buddy found out where it was kept, hidden. One day when his grandparents went to town shopping, he took it out and we went into the woods and shot a box of ammo through it.

I don't remember that he got caught and punished, but I'm guessing he did... we always did. :o

That buddy eventually went astray and his grandparents passed on. Many years later, another friend of mine bought the house and property. When he was doing some gardening, he found the completely rusted remains of that pistol and gave it to me. Sad. I wonder why it ended up buried. Maybe it's better that I don't know!
