I inherited a few old pistols when my grandpa passed away. one is an old smith and wesson top break pistol that is missing the hammer.

serial number 449XX
caliber is i am pretty sure .38
barrel length is 5"

I would like to try to get it put back together, not for monetary value but mainly for personal value. any info would be greatly appreciated thank you

Welcome to the forum. Your grandfather's revolver is a .38 Double Action, Second Model. The second model was produced from 1880 to 1884.

It ought to be possible to find a hammer, and one of the forum members here might even have one in a spare parts box.
