I just acquired a Model 36 snubby, blued with a round butt and a serial # of 2Jxxxx...in researching the serial number for date of mfg, I couldn't find a reference to a "2J" prefix serial number.. (The Standard Catalog was no help) --- anyone out there who would have an idea of what the "2J" prefix means -- Thanks for any help on this.

Larry, that serial number is part of the ones sometimes referred to as the floating Js. They are the ones on page 399 of the SCSW, 3rd edition.
The book shows J1 - 999J99 but I seem to remember reading that there was a type O and it should have been 1J - 999J99.
They come from 1971 - 72.

Thanks a lot, bamabike.. i went back to p. 399 and realized I hadn't looked closely enough --- I saw what you mentioned...Thanks again, I really appreciate you getting back to me.

When was Model 36 ser. # 5J47* manufactured
What would it be worth in new condition

Welcome to the forum dip.
That serial number would also come from 1971 - 72.
Value? With so little info I'd say $500 if in new condition.
Original grips and box can add to value. Barrel length and blue or nickel finish can effect value.

Original grips and original box
