Guys:

Don't freak out, I have searched everywhere and I can't figure this out.

I have a DVA{none Magpul} fixed Smith sights. I'm looking for perhaps a 4x short scope that I can mount that will:

1. Not cause me to remove my stock rear sight.
2. Not be so high that I need a step ladder to reach up to look through it.
3. Won't have Mrs Mrasgt telling me I have to live in the garage because of cost.
4. Maybe have a rubber armor look to it. {not a deal breaker}

I don't know anything about risers, scope mounts etc, I do prefer a 4x. And those fancy quick release things look kool.

I've been looking at Leapers Bug Buster but honestly, it kinda looks like an airsoft product. If not, tell me.

I keep reading here to stay away from NC star.

I am of the belief that I am not going to want to spend a lot of money on a 450 gun.

Please show mercy on me and educate me on this.

Go slow, pictures, arrows, diagrams of the back, links, etc.

I will look at anything and consider any recomendation from fellow 15-22 fanatics that have been through this.

Please hurry, I'm starting to have the mod shakes!!!!

Regards,

Your scope challenged 15-22 crazed lunitic!!!

to be honest theres no "great" cheap scope. People may have had good luck with them but nevertheless they are cheap products. You can always try one out just to see how it works for you, but i wouldnt spend more than $50.

I'm just a little intrigued how you plan on keeping the stock rear sight while looking through your scope? Im assuming you want to use both irons and the scope together? Problem is if you mount the scope between the two iron sights you will have problems getting within the proper eye relief. You could do one of those carry handle/riser things. I just hate how the scope looks mounted ontop the carry handle.

This is one of the best dime store compact 4x scopes (though probably closer to 3x) I have used. Micro fine reticle like the ACOG 4X32 TAO1. When lit the reticle remains as fine and crisp as when not. Primary Arms used to carry them and would be sold out within a day or two after each shipment arrived. I think Sig has some for sale that are similar without the rails. Like most all dime store optics with lit reticles... the glass is not very bright. The image, however, is crisp from edge to edge.

The new MBUS Gen2 with lower profile might slip under the eyepiece but Gen1 just barely won't fit. For an AR platform the scope is about a 1/4'' lower than it could be. Probably very close to the same height as the NcStar scopes with integrated mount.

I recently installed a replica acog I got from amazon, the one I got is only 1x, but I was able to look through the scope and Line up my sights. I only paid $60 for it, I like it even though there are a lot of people that will tell you to stay away from them. And there are 4x replica acog scopes out there

- Need to know your $$$ range to give any real suggestions.

- Keeping the rear sight on is going to cause problems with a magnified scope. Keeping the rear sight will be ok with a 1X red dot scope that is co-witnessed with your sights.

- On an AR platform, your scope will need a riser or extra tall rings to bring it up to roughly the level of your current front/rear sights. You can't mount too low because the top of the stock is even with the top of your receiver (unlike a bolt action rifle where the top of the receiver is generally higher than the top of the stock). It's not possible to get a proper cheek-to-stock position if you mount too low, i.e. no riser. The height of the riser depends on a couple of things.
- how big around/how tall the optic is.
- personal preference.

You should always mount as low as possible while maintaining the ability to get a consistent cheek-to-stock position. You should never pick your head up off the stock and move it around to get a good site picture. Mount the optic so you don't have to do this.

Thanks guys...
1. looking at around $100+/-
2. I have a Bushy/carry handle with a Bushnell tr-25 red dot that I barely got to sight in, but it worked. I can paint smiley
faces with it.
3. I know I can't go to high, I need to watch the bore axis.
4. A couple of you mentioned "this one" but I didnt see a link, name or pic.
Maybe I cant do this with magnification. I was trying to go 2-4 x if possible and co witness with irons, it may just be too high.

Please keep commenting, I suppose I could go to the local GS
but I thought I'd try on-line, with experience with y'all.

Any comments on the leaper bug buster?

Anything else would help.

Thanks,

Mark

Can't co-witness with magnification. You can, however, use a carry handle to mount a 4x and still have use of iron sights. These particular scopes have mounts specifically designed to mount very low into the carry handle. There is only about .75 inch from center of rear aperture to center of scope eyepiece.

If you want proper eye relief for the scope, have a peep sight that you can use, keep the bore axis within reason and have the same cheek weld no matter what sight you're using, replace the rear sight with a MAGPUL or similar BUIS.
This is a NcSTAR MARK III scope with the quick disconnect base. I machined a riser so the scope cowitnesses perfectly and clears the folded sight.
The finished risers were sand blasted then hard black anodized. This one is shiny.

scope questions

OK,

It appears I can not have magnafication and keep my irons.
If I am getting everything I'm seeing here, I can go 1x red dot
and co witness my: boat anchors".

Last {I hope} question in this regard.....
Is there any 2-3-4 x red dots out there? if so, pics or links?

Lastly, short of removing my "boat anchors" which x red dot would you try in the $100 or less range? Pics or links

Thanks for all the help'

Mark

Sorry I couldn't get a better pic looking through it. that's a 1x acog clone from amazon for $65.

Yes, there are low magnification red dots. Burris AR 332 and Millet DMS are popular ones.

Some folks opt for a separate red dot and magnifier. Primary Arms offers some interesting combos. You can get flip to the side mounts for the magnifier and other configurations. I don't think much of separates but some really like em.

As far as just a $100 1x red dot here is my favorite. Primary Arms Micro Dot.
