Looking to trade my pinned (1980) model 15. No box or papers. Condition is a TRUE 99% with minty factory target grips. FOR a 98% 686-5 FOUR INCH . PRE lock but with frame mounted firing pin and MIM trigger.

Sounds like a fair trade? Thank You.

I wouldn't balk at that trade if you have use of the 686. The 15 might be a touch more on the used market, desirability and price-wise -- but not enough to quibble over.

I would think it would be a fairly even trade. (to me, the 686 might be worth a little more but not much)
Go with whichever one you have the most use for.

I would not make that trade. If somebody has a nice 686 they want to give for my model 15, they will then have to hit the ATM for another $100.

Really ? I haven't really kept up with values lately but seems like 686s are going for around $500 - $600, correct ?
I bought a nice nickel Model 15 (4") at a pawn shop a couple of months ago for $300. ($327 OTD)
What are 15s going for ?

It's a great trade for the other guy, but would only be "fair" for you. If the 686 was earlier (no dash or dash 1), it would be a fair trade. The quality of your 15 is most likely higher than the 686-5. Good luck.

You can buy 686 all day long all over the country.
How many model 15 revolvers you seeing on the shelves are you seeing?

I wouldn't make that trade if you told me i had to. You have one fine wheelgun buddy dont trade it for one you can get anywhere anytime. They dont make P&R M15's anymore!!!! I love the combat masterpiece its one fine handgun!

It depends on you. If you feel you have a need for a stainless .357 Magnum or feel you no longer can maintain the blued finish of a beautiful classic, then by all means trade him. If, however you like the look and feel of a true classic fire arm that shoots "only" .38 Specials then keep it. Me I'd stick with the 15 and be happy with it.

Might be me, but I bump into 15s all the time at shows or online; 686s much less so.

Don't know about the build quality of the late '90s S&Ws (which I believe the 686 in question is from), but the early '90s S&Ws wheel guns I have -- which are supposed to be the worst period for quality -- beat my '70s and early '80s examples in every respect.

One data point, but there it is.

I, personally, wouldn't trade any K frame for any L frame, but that's just me.

Not a chance! I personally would not go newer than the -4 in a 686 and if your 15 is really 99%, then you have a fantastic revolver in increasingly rare condition, made in a time when S&W still focused on their wheel guns.

Keep your model 15 my good man. For goodness sake...keep your model 15.

Avery is heading to the safe to hold his 15-3...

Dollar wise in this market, it's a fairly even trade.

Personal decisions as to whether or not to make the trade. It's up to you. If it was a 686-4, I would probably do it if I wanted a 686.

They are right, you can get 686's still. Not so much a 15-3.

I've recently acquired a K-38 Masterpiece Model 15-3. And beyond any shadow of a doubt it is the sweetest most true shooting revolver I've ever owned. I don't foresee the day that I would ever trade or sell this pistol. Best of luck with your choice.

I would go this far: If I saw you wanting to trade your 15-3 for a 686, I would go out and BUY a 686 and send it to you for your 15. THAT's how much I think it's a bad idea.
