Hi fellers, long time no post for me. I need some information and I know this is the right place to gather it. I have a stainless 640 Smith j frame SERIAL NO. CEN358X that I bought new ( I can't remember the year ) and I am considering selling off for something better suited for the wife to carry. With the smooth grips and heavy trigger pull she is having problems getting confident with it. It is also stamped "tested +P+ and 1-217 on the top of the yoke. Could someone give me a ballpark idea of what to ask for this on a trade or local sale? It has fired less than 100 rounds, no box and no dents or scratches with a faint turn line. Any help would be appreciated and thanks.

$300 would be a fair price, assuming it's in the condition/use that you state, with no box. I picked up a LNIB 640 manufactured in 1995 in February of 2012 for $350.00.

It is one of the early 640s from 1989 with the stampings you describe. These tend to bring a little more than the later 640s. Somewhere in the $450-500 range would probably be a quick sale, and you might get a little more if you want to wait.

Thank you sir, that sounds more realistic.

I've heard anecdotes that the serial number prefix CEN was pulled out of order for use specifically on the very first run of the Model 640 Centennials. Consequently, I think there might be a premium added for this variant.

I have one of the early CEN centennials like new condition in the original box with tools and papers and would not sell it for less than $600.

Thanks, I just wanted to really get a feel for the value. I know its worth more than 350, that's what people are paying around here for rossi and taurus guns and I would let it stay in the safe forever before giving it away. I think I will start at 500 and work down if no interest at that level. Again appreciate all the input.

Don't give up on it just yet.....

is it a new gun, maybe hasn't been broken in yet. Or
Have you considered changing the grips and perhaps put a set of Wolf springs in it to lighten the trigger pull?
You be surprised what something as simple as a different set of grips or reduced trigger weight can do.
