Hi guys. New to this forum and to the old(er) style, all steel smith semi autos.

I've been inTo guns since 2000 and I'm ashamed to say that until this summer I've never seen, heard, or handled the steel smiths .

I've had most polymer handguns and 1 steel 1911. This summer, while shopping at a local store I found a police trade in S&W 5946 CLVNDPD. After playing with it I found the trigger to be very clean, crisp and fairly light. The gun was very clean and felt like it was made for me and my hand. Balanced very well. Although not as light as mt Glock 19 or my M&P it feels much better. So since then I've been on the look out for 3 rd gen Smiths. While I had to let a few slip by (39series, 4509, 457, and a few others) at very good prices I have since put a 1006 on layaway for $500 and another 5946, this one capable of firing without a mag for $200. Very clean gun. I can't believe how cheap and well built these guns are. Wish I knew of them sooner.

1st question. If the gun says "caution capable of firing without magazine" does that mean it was a PD or some type of LEO trade?

2nd, not that it's a big deal but....how do I make my other smiths to fire without a mag?

Thanks

Oh one more question. Any comment on a 4513? There is one for $399? Sonyvalle Ca PD. is it a good price? Good gun? I'm debating on trading my RI 1911 for it

First, Welcome to the forum and the addiction.

As to the first question, it just means that gun did not come from the factory with the magazine disconnect. Some PDs required the disconnect feature, some did not or didn't want it at all.

As to the second question, the magazine disconnect is generally located under the rear sight. If the rear sight is drifted to the right, the spring and plunger are exposed and may be removed. Be careful, the spring is under tension and may shoot out if you go to quickly. Once removed, the rear sight needs to be drifted back into position. The gun will now fire with the mag removed.

I'm pretty sure that's how I did my last one, however,if someone has different or better information, I'm sure they will correct me.

Keep in mind though, if you do this, you are deactivating a safety device which was part of the factory design.

I'm not familiar with the 4513s so I'll leave that for others with first hand knowledge.

If the 4513(tsw) is in nice shape, you should grab it- fast! That's a great deal!
