I got the opportunity to shoot a Hi-Point 9mm Carbine w/ red dot scope today at the range. Not sure if anyone has had the chance to try one of these but, I was very impressed. I put 30 rounds (10 rd capacity mags) through the gun and it hit point of aim every shot w/ 0 malfunctions. Seems to be a nice gun priced at under 300 dollars.

The same guy also let me try his GSG 22lr which seemed to also be a nice gun...

Anyone shoot either of these? If so, Id like to hear your opinion.....

TIA - Brian

A LGS about a half mile from work is a Highpoint dealer and has both the 9mm and 40 caliber carbines in stock. Since 5 or my 7 handguns shoot the 40, I find it a very interesting gun, it's cheap, has a great warranty, and a couple of people I know with the 9mm version think they are a blast for plinking with. However, I'm currently holding out for a Marlin lever gun in 357 Magnum and I'm on the list if one ever comes in on a trade.

I tribal cop I know in Montana kills deer with his every year, using 147 grain Hydra-Shoks. I shot it a few times - it was very reliable, had a terrible trigger pull, and kicked way too hard for a 9mm. I'd get one if a good deal came along.

When I bought the one I used to own, I paid $139 for it. I owned it for about 4 years, and put a couple thousand rounds through it. Everything from cheap white box and UMC, to +P+, +P and standard JHP's
It never jammed once, and was incredably accurate with just about anything I shot in it. Tiny groups at 50 yds.
I once ripped through a 50rd box of cheap UMC FMJ at 100yds, firing offhand, standing, as fast as I could pull the trigger and reload the mags. I ended up with a group the size of a dinner plate.
I used to keep it handy around the house.
Eventually, I sold it (for $150) while accumulating cash for the purchase of my CMP M1 carbine.

+1 on amd6547's comments. I have one that is very accurate with Speer GD 124gr +P JHPs. Oh, and they are really trucking from a 16" barrel.:D

I have one of the 995TS versions that I bought on sale last year because I found myself with a few thousand rounds of 9x19 ammo and no 9x19 firearm. My plan was to have fun shooting up the ammo and sell the carbine. I had so much fun shooting up the ammo I'm now reloading more 9x19 for the carbine than I ever did for any handgun.

First time at the range I took 6 different loadings from 4 manufactures and my standard cast reloads. The carbine happily digested everything, which surprised me for an inexpensive semi-automatic.

I bought the .40 JCP pistol when I was concerned about home safety after my divorce and was almost broke. Been a good, accurate pistol. New wife bought herself a used C9 Comp, I updated the firing pin spring on it and we shoot the heck out of it, not a big fan of the compensator. Third time we went out to the buddy's range to shoot, he says "I almost forgot, I have a Hi Point too." (He has guns stashed all over his house, mostly old oddball or milsurp stuff other than his Ruger P95) and he pulls out a 995 classic with ATI stock.

We proceeded to feed some Federal Champion and Blazer brass through it, and he had some steel cased, gray lacquered rounds that he said he had bought years ago, and not a hiccup one. Trigger pull was a bit more than I liked, and the trigger was actually painful right before it released the striker. I told him I was gonna fix that for him, got the serial number and had Hi Point send me some parts. I made him an extended trigger out of aluminum which made a world of difference. Took him about a month to get the parts in it, but man what a difference, probably 2 lbs off the trigger pull and nice and smooth and no more pinch!

Plus, though I never needed to find out for myself, the stories I hear about HiPoints warranty put many big name manufacturers to shame.

This would be the only Hi-Point I would ever own. Shot a friends a few times and they work! Nice cheap carbine.

Honestly, there is not much I would change about the HiPoint carbine, nor do I really care for the new "tacticool" model.
The only thing that would make it better, is if they adapted it to use Glock mags.
There have been rumors of a new 45acp model for a couple years.

I always thought of getting one , but wasnt sure of reliability issues, after this post may pick one up if the price is right.

Picked up one today, the carbine and 5 15 rd mags for 300. Took it to the range and had one ftf that occurred about 2/3 through the last mag. Loaded them up again and had no ftf on the 2nd run through. This ain't the prettiest, nor the most accurate carbine/rifle that I own, but it is going in my vehicle along with the CZ-75 DA that I picked up used and has never had a ftf in a couple of thousand rds.

Supposedly the 45 is in production, but still very hard top find. I prefer the TS stock personally, and there is only two things I'd really like to change. First, I'd like a dust cover over the ejection port. Second, I'd like the front sight height changed so it would work with a AR carry handle.

Promag makes the 15rd mags. They're rather iffy when it comes to QC and attention to detail. Many users report that the mags, unless total lemons, work fine after tweaking.

Anyway, I wouldn't get one where I paid extra for a red dot sight or similar gadget as part of the package, simply because I'd have no faith in an electro-optical system in a lower tier price range.

Prices have gone up on the Hi Points whereas they've come down on AK clones. Depending on what you want it for, you might be better served with an actual rifle firing rifle ammunition than with a pistol caliber carbine.

I ended up with a lifetime affinity for IIIA vests thanks to the Hi Points being relatively common even in years past. You do gain some velocity (usually) out of the longer tube.

I'm pretty active over on the Hi Point forums, and have been for some time. I can tell you that 95% of the problems with any of the firearms are the cheap, outsourced mags, but short of modifying a 1911 mag for the .40 and .45 pistols, you are pretty well stuck with the factory offering. Promags have been hit and miss as far as function. A good fluff and buff of the mag ears and setting them closer to what the factory wants helps incredibly. Many of us have sent emails to the main contact asking for better QC on the mags, and improvements have slowly been happening.

The really good thing about the Hi Points is that you don't have to be afraid to machine up your own add-on parts, I have skeletonized aluminum triggers on all mine that I made out in the shop just to get rid of the plastic ones, lol.

Yes, an AK is a "more capable weapon", and I happen to own one, and a an AR. But I find that a pistol caliber carbine is a more rational HD weapon.

I think it all comes down to what a firearm is intended for. You don't use a Mosin to hunt pheasant, you don't shoot buffalo with a .25, you don't expect long range performance out of a carbine that shoots pistol caliber ammo.
