Hi-Standard Sport king found a new home !

I ventured out 75 miles to Cabelas today to take a look around to see if I could find some cool old Smith and Wesson, No such luck,,, But I did see a High Standard Sport King (SK100) with instruction sheet, 2 mags and a Heavy Ported bull barrel as well as the standard barrel. Both barrels are 6 3/4" And all told everything looks pretty much like a 98% gun with very little use or wear. I am Happy, It was 299 for everything. I have wanted one for quite awhile now and never seemed to find one that floated my boat till this one,,,
Now the funny part,,, I dont know much about them, Can I use any 22lr ammo with it?
The Ser# is 486*** and as near as I can tell it was made between 1954 and 57...
I am hoping I can make it out to the range soon to play with my new toy.
Any info you may have would be greatly appreciated!!!
And just look at the size of the compensator ports on the spare barrel! They are HUGE!
In with the instruction sheets, There is a spare parts list with a pic of the ported barrel. Price was $14.00.

Peter, Did you have a hamburg in Hamburg? Nice package and that's a great price. It shouldn't be too finicky but some ammo will work better than others. Start with standard velocity, the Eley match stuff is pretty good. Good luck with it!

I had one of those with 4" and 6" in barrels when I was in high school. Traded a Colt New Frontier .22 in a walnut presentation case for it. First time I fired it, I learned where the right thumb was not supposed to be.

Looking at my latest 401k statement, I guess I am not any better at trading now than I was in 1975 lol.

Funny - I was on the exact same mission the other day - hit at least 6 shops and only found one S&W...an older model 19 2" wearing Pachmyers and very heavily used (sigh). Then found a High Standard HD Military showing some wear, one mag only, I think the 4 3/4" (?) barrel. Passed on it, as I knew little about it, but was impressed by the sheer weight of the gun. After reading a bit about it, note that someone wrote that a spring could be pinched and ruined if taken down improperly, so be sure to read that manual!

I used to own HS Citations and Trophys back in my Bullseye shooting days. HS are great guns, you will enjoy it. They like standard vel 22LR ammo. One of those guns that I wish I hadn't let go.

I've got a Supermatic Tournament from the early 60's,CCI standard velocity seem to agree w/it.

Congrats on a fine 22. High Standard is the best imho. The early New Haven and Hamden models are the best (and from the original plant in Hartford, CT from 1929-1930 if you can find one). Quality started falling off after management changes and the move to East Hartford. I shoot a 1969 Supermatic Trophy and put Federal through it all the time, but I should experiment with different brands of .22 ammo. A Victor is really high on my "Want List".

I got the HS thumb in my first intro to shooting handguns also. It hurt like heck but I finished the mag. Many years later I bought a nice HD Military that I love to shoot. You got a real steal with that combo.

I've posted this link before, but I'll do it again because it is positively one of the best. "Everything you always wanted to know about High Standard, but didn't have enough money to bother asking."

High Standard is one of the most mind boggling of all. There were so many variations and modifications that collectors (or even a casual buyer) must be very careful when looking for a factory original.

Bobski and John Stimson are the real HS guru's. Pretty long, but very interesting reading.

Pred, you done GOOD, that is a very nice "package"....
I have always been 'partial' to the High Standards, and have yet to find anything that can "outshoot" them....here are the two I have "settle" on a late 60's Trophy , we use for 'competition' and one of the slant grip Victors we just put away after we got it, sadly I had the 'other barrel ( shorter) slant grip also, but sold it in a time of "need" and the guy will NOT sell it back ( gee, I wonder why )

........oh well....

as for what to use, stay with the standard velocity, most accurate and not beat the heck out of your gun........
