I've run into a storage problem with my guns, of running out of room in the gun safe. Of course I have a number of rifles and shotguns, but the bulk of my collection is handguns. The trouble is that most safe interiors are constructed assuming that it's the other way around, that people have more rifles and shotguns and all they need for handgun storage is a couple of shelves. The pictures usually look something like this:
Does anyone here have so much extra room in their safe that they can use it to store their earmuffs, or a plastic duck decoy? Ha! I've got layers of guns, covered by a cloth, covered by another layer of guns and another cloth and another layer. Really hinders access. I don’t really have room to add another safe (I have a Fort Knox) and need to efficiently utilize the volume that I have, or buy a different safe that does. Just adding more narrowly spaced shelves is a poor strategy because then I have to grope deep into the safe, without being able to see and with little room to manuever. Plus the thickness of the shelves takes up space. I know some of you guys must be like me and have tons of handguns. How do you store them all?
What I’d like to see is a vault that has a set of drawers at the bottom, each just tall enough for a handgun, that span the full width of the door and reach to the back of the safe. They need to extend completely on heavy duty roller slides to be able to access the very back of the drawer. I’m thinking something like blueprint files, like this:
The space on top of the drawers could be used to store long guns. The problem with this is that most gun safes have a very deep return lip on the front for the door to recess into, which would amount to four inches or so of wasted space on each side of the drawers. I suppose that could be a space to stick really long, long guns.
Does anyone make a safe interior like this?
