Say what you mean to do, on every occasion, and do the right thing. If a friend asks a favor, you should do it, if it is reasonable; if not, tell him why you can't. Never do a wrong thing to make a friend or keep one. Be kind, but firm, with your classmates or friends. Do not appear to others what you are not. If you have a fault with someone, tell him, not others. Do or say nothing to hurt any one, it gives you peace and honor. If you are ever in doubt, tell the truth.

My advice for today's generation:

Put the smart phone down and see what the world is really like.

Keep appointments, show up early and be prepared.

Grow a thicker skin and accept criticism.

Not everything is about you, you are NOT that special and there are no prizes just for showing up.

Life is harsh, deal with it - or don't.

“Say what you mean. Mean what you say. First time, every time.”

Or its variation, “If you’re gonna talk the talk, you gotta walk the walk.”

These principles will get one far in the business world, and in life in general.

This is all great stuff. Anyone with kids in their lives should keep these in mind.

Just one thought (and I do not mean this critically, sarcastically, or any other way than straight up):

Waiting until high school graduation with this advice might be too late. I've worked with quite a few kids who would have benefited from someone starting to tell them these things, oh, maybe about ten years earlier ;)

I would tell them to remember that their name is only as good as their word ! One lie can ruin your life !! Lie's
can never be remembered because the mind only remembers true events !!

Next I would say I was sorry for the world we are leaving the younger generation to try to fix !!

My dad and grandad started my education early .Right after my tenth birthday I heard him and mom having a serious but low voiced discussion she said he’s only 10 dad answered exactly he isn’t your little baby anymore he’s 10 .Early next morning I was at my uncles farm dad told my uncle to put me to work under Mr Buddy (he was the field hand forman ) then dad said to me son Mr Buddy is going to teach you to work like in the real world because me and your mom love you too much for that .Mr.Buddy said boy if I take a step you take two .Over the next 5 years every summer and most out of school days and Saturdays I learned how to work like a man is supposed to.Dad signed a workers permit when I was 15 so I could go to work at a local restaurant which was a pie job compared to farming .When I graduated from HS my dad said son if you work like Mr.Buddy taught you and are as honest and fair with folks as Big Ralph (Mr Ralph to me he owned the restaurant ) has taught you in this country you can not help but be successful plus good people will gravitate towards you so good friends and a great wife will not be hard to find.I just hope that if you have children especially sons you will love them as much as I did you when I first took you to the old place and introduced you to Mr .Buddy .He was so right and I tried to love my sons enough to raise them the same way .He was right I asked my wife once (she was considered one of the prettiest girls in the county when we met ) why in the world she asked me out all those years ago at the restaurant .She said my dad pointed at you and you sweeping the parking lot and sweating like a mule pulling a horse and a half plow and said hon now that right there is boy friend material he is going take care of his family and mom said sure is .Ugly old me no football playing no beach tanning ect just working like a mule but I end up with the prettiest girl in the county simply because my dad loved me so much .Dang he was wise .
