Been wanting a GI style 1911 .45 for a while and was just about to order a Rock Island from Sarco, and they suddenly raised the price about 40 bucks. Their guns are now about $400 delivered, and I know a dealer who has a High Standard 1911 .45 that is new in the box for $415. I don't want to spend any more money than that, and the HS actually looks a little better than the Rock Island, but I have not heard much about the High Standard guns. Which would you choose in that price range?

Hi Standard

If the Hi Standard is marked Pahrump Nv.on the bottom of the dust cover it will be warranted for life by Advanced Tactical the USA distributor of Rock Islands .I have 2 rocks 1 a full size tactical & a compact size with a 3 1/2 both are keepers
For the price the Tactical features are well worth the extra $

Sorry, can't help on a HS 1911, but the RIA 3 1/2" compact I have is as accurate as any 1911 I have had. well built and reliable. My "old" High Standard Victor bullseye .22RF is an outstanding gun, but this is an old one by the original mfg.

The current production High Standard 1911s are made in the Phillipines by the same firm that makes the Rock Island 1911s, on the same assembly lines, same parts, etc. Variances in finish are the primary differences, mechanically and structurally, they are the same. Both are imported by the same outfit in Nevada, which has developed a good reputation for customer service. I haven't shot one, but most of those who have written of their experiences with them on the variousl 1911 forums consider them pretty good, especially considering the price.
