A friend recently inherited a High Standard model H D Military 22 target pistol. She asked me what it might be worth. TRUGUNVALUE gave me a quick and reasonable answer, but there’s a problem. This pistol is nickel finished. Did High Standard ever produce a nickel plated model H D Military? If not, does the plating (it seems very well done) add to or detract from the value? Same question for the immaculate white checkered Fitzite grips. Any info or opinions will be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like an interesting gun. I’d like to see a picture of it, a very high-quality Nickle job would probably not detract from the value but it does need to be very high-quality. Average quality or worse and the price goes down quickly.

You don't specify which barrel length, but in any case the H-D Military is one of the most common of the High Standard pistols, with about 150K being produced. There's no indication that any were ever nickel plated at the factory. I'd judge that (at least from a collector's standpoint) the non-original refinish and replacement grips detract significantly from its value. A "shooter" that may appeal to somebody who wants it solely for that purpose.

The High Standard target pistols are some of the best although the H-D Military wouldn't be my first choice of the models available. I've never seen and H-D in nickel. No reason it shouldn't be a good shooter and for someone who wants one for that purpose the value is probably not hurt much if any. I'd think $400-$500 is about what I'd expect to pay for one where I shop.

If you want a plinker or informal target gun, the HS HD is great! If you are looking for a refined target pistol, the other HS models are more suitable.

Almost any refinish will detract from collector's values but a high quality refinish does not detract from good looks and utility.

150K is too high perhaps around 142K. There were no production nickel MODEL H-D MILITARY but there was a sample gun in nickel

If the nickel finish is not original, the price will be negatively affected -- that is, it detracts from the value.
Of course, if you find the "right person", it could sell for highly exaggerated price.
