Ran across this in my LGS earlier this week, couldn’t get it out of my head so I went back and checked it out properly. It’s a model 28–2 highway patrolman, serial number in the N547xxx range so 1979-ish, correct? There’s a slight bit of fore and aft play in the cylinder but nothing detrimental. DA trigger pull is smooth, SA trigger pull is crisp and light. The only thing really “wrong” with it are the Pachmayr grips (didn’t come with Factory stocks and I’m not a fan of the Pachmayrs I’ve tried in the past) but I’ll find something suitable eventually. Hope I can get to the range to work it out this weekend.

Congratulations. I got one a few weeks ago, from about that same time period, that came with a funky set of K-frame target grips on it. I swapped them out for a set of Altamonts from a Model 29-10 I had. For some reason they didn't fit the 29 well, so I put a Hogue on the 29 and moved the Altamonts over to the 28 where they fit fairly well.

Great looking old Smith. Just the right amount of wear. That gun was made to shoot-alot!! Personally, I have always liked the feel of those grips, especially like yours with the finger grooves when shooting any hot .38's or magnum rounds. Other grips may look better but some are very uncomfortable when actually using the gun. Enjoy.

You snagged a nice Model 28-2! They are built like tanks and are fun and dependable shooters. A little Flitz and some RenWax and you'll probably be amazed at how it cleans up. I'm also a fan of gently used revolvers, and have a few HPs in my modest collection. Most of my 28-2s are ca. 1974-77. Enjoy!

Here’s the family photo. The 28, 38/44, a Model 10 6”, model 10 2”, model 17, model 36, 1917, and my CMP range grade 1911 (1942 colt frame, Remington Rand slide).

I’ll likely move the Hogues (which I like better, they seem to fit my hands perfectly) from the 38/44 to the 28 and put the original grips with a BK adapter
