This is the story of two of my friends whose houses caught fire in the middle of the night. Neither one had working smoke detectors. They both lived alone. My friend Dan perished in the fire. The cause of death was accidental smoke inhalation and carbon monoxide poisoning. His body was found in his den on the floor. He must have been heading for the window as both outside doors were blocked by the fire. I will be attending his memorial service this afternoon.

My friend Herman had disconnected his smoke detector because a spider kept setting it off in the middle of the night. His cat Lucky kept pestering him and he finally got up to see what the problem was and discovered smoke coming into the kitchen from the garage. It was determined that his Studebaker Avante had caught fire because of an electrical short in the wiring. He found Lucky as a kitten caught in a dumpster and he rescued her and took her home. It turned out he was the lucky one as he would most likely have perished in the fire without her waking him up.

That's very sad about your friend Dan. Even more sad is that it happens a lot, and events like this are so easily prevented. Smoke detectors and batteries are dirt cheap now.

Although your friend Herman didn't know it when he rescued Lucky from the dumpster and took her home, it was literally a life saving decision on his part. Again, this is a hard way to learn a lesson, but he and Lucky were both...lucky.

Everyone needs to be aware of the plain common sense aspects of having smoke detectors. Ditto for carbon monoxide detectors.

Not having detectors in your home is like not having brakes on your car. Both scenarios are deadly.

I heard at the memorial service that Dan only had one smoke detector and it was found on the floor of the den.
