Can someone give a brief history of the round in terms of what bullet grain weight it began with and how this evolved/changed over time?

My understanding was that the original load was a 246 Grain Lead Round Nose bullet over black powder. As far as my research indicates, there were no other bullet designs offered for the cartridge early in its life. I don't recall the standard weight of the bullet in the 44 Russian, but from the 38 Long Colt to 38 Special transition we can logically infer that there was only a small increase (if any) in projectile weight. The factory loaded a 150 grain LRN for the 38 LC and then the 38 Special was loaded with a 158 grain LRN bullet, which is approximately a 5% increase in bullet weight to go with the increased case capacity.

Regards, Jesse
