Hi folks,

I am intending to prepare for IDPA and IPSC (as a novice) and I have an M&P9 and M&P45 FS. What holsters do you recommend for a longer-term usage, not just for the novice event:
  1. the gun
  2. magazines

Also, how many magazines do I need? I am leaning towards Production and SSP events.

Thanks!

Remember the rule differences between the respective sports before you drop a lot of money on equipment. USPSA is a four mag game and IDPA is two mags. The cant of the holster differs as well.

Be sure to get gear that will meet or exceed rules of both games, ie. cover the trigger guard etc. Read the rules of both IDPA and USPSA so that you know what is and is NOT legal. for my M&P's I am using a DeSantis OWB holster that is really made for a Glock 20/21, however all manufacturers offer holsters for M&P's now.
I prefer an open top (no retention strap) on mine and really like horsehide when I can get it. I also use several Kramer and Milt Sparks holsters with great satisfaction.
Mag pouches can be easily found for almost all magazines made today from all of the major makers. I find most of mine at pawn shops, the gun store box of leather stuff and also on eBay. Some were as little as $2.00
I am a big believer in having an abundance of magazines for any handgun in my herd, usually 6 and many times more than that when I can find them
Get a good range bag to keep it all in and to transport from bay to bay and you are good to go!!!
Hope this helps in some small manner...

I would focus on the 9mm; ammo is cheaper, recoil is less, and everything is scored Minor in Production anyhow.

An IDPA compliant holster will work for IPSC/USPSA.
Blade-Tech sells an outfit with a separate drop loop so you can wear the holster high-ride for IDPA and drop it down for IPSC.
I use Ready Tac because I shoot with the maker.
Comp Tac has a national reputation. There are others but Kydex pretty well rules the roost as a holster material.

It is hard to have too many magazines, but as a practical matter, you must have at least three for IDPA. You won't have to fire more than 18 shots in any one timed string so two is usually enough but the occasional downloaded start or mandated tactical reload will put you into the third. As will a malfunction.
Three is all you may use at one time; one in the gun and two on the belt. More is nice so you can move directly from one stage to the next without having to reload magazines in a hurry. I have six for my PM&P SSP, more for 1911s.

IPSC/USPSA does more shooting. I'd want five; one in the gun and four reloads.

Obviously you need sufficient magazine pouches. Many of us prefer singles so we can space them on our belt the way we want them. All the holster makers furnish magazine carriers.

You will need a good stout belt. IPSC allows the double belts where you can put your holster and mag carriers on the outer belt and leave them in position. It sticks to the inner belt with Velcro. IDPA does not allow that, your holster must be on a belt through pants belt loops. The Wildnerness Instructor's belt or similar heavy nylon belt as wide as will fit your pants is popular.

Holster and mag pouches

Blade=tech OWB holster and Fobus OWB mag pouches. I have used thses for years. I shot USPSA and IDPA. Fobus cheaper, but hold up.
Good luck

Comp-Tac Competition set.
They cost about $100 and work.
You can use them in IDPA as well as Production, and Limited 10 in USPSA.
I've been using them for years with good results.
