I have had a .44 Mountain Gun for some time, and recently picked up a .357 to go with it. When I hike, I have carried the .44 in a minimalist OWB slide holster. I'd like to get something more substantial that either of them can ride in. I want something that will protect the gun while I'm transporting it in a backpack and/or BOB, but also be functional as an OWB. On line pictures and descriptions have not been very informative or helpful.

I know a guy down in Alabama who makes some great looking holsters...

If you want good protection, as well as a three position holster, go to Galco's website and take a look at the Phoenix.

Or Bianchi's version the Cyclone. I find the thumbstrap for the Phoenix is made for thinner hammers, while the Cyclone is made for wider.

A while back, I purchased Lobo's full flap field holster for my 624 snub. It's as tough as a saddle and will outlive me and the revolver. Great value, and Ray is a true gentleman to work with.

Lefty at BCO offers something very attractive for field carry too.

I had Mernickle make one of their DA revolver "duty" holsters for a 4" 624.
The Mountain Revolver/gun fits perfectly. For your purposes however
you may want a more secure carry.
In fact, I have ordered a holster with a thumb strap for a 4" 629.
We will see how well it fits the tapered barrel(s).
I'll let you know in a couple of days when it gets here.

You may be after more coverage for the "top" of the revolver than this, but thought I'd add pics of a Black Hills Leather OWB holster I had made for a five-inch Model 27. I suspect a thumb-break could have been added to something like this. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1350704065.253937.jpg

I have Lobo Leather Snap-Loop Pancake and Flap holsters for several of my revolvers and am very satisfied. Ray is a pleasure to deal with and has a relatively quick delivery time.

I also like the Milt Sparks #200 AW, HSR, and PMK models for my revolvers but wait time seems to be a minimum of six months.

I don't have an official "Mountain Gun", just a regular 4" 629 that I wear often in the rainy, wet, snowy woods of the Cascade Mountains in Washington state. I too use Bianchi's Cyclone 111 (crossdraw model) and wear it on my strong side (right) unless I'm also carrying a long gun then it goes crossdraw on my left hip so that the hammer doesn't mar up the buttstock of my shotgun or rifle.

It is a sturdy, simple and reliable holster that keeps the gun secure and snug and has never been knocked out by a snapping branch or root. Should a bear or quick target suddenly require immediate access, the one snap on the thick retaining band comes open in a flash with a push to the side by the thumb as the hand secures the grip for the draw... I don't think I'd want a "full flap" holster - too slow in this regard and yes, too big, heavy and bulky as well. C.B.

+1 On the simply rugged! I carry my MG in mine all the time when the wife and I are out wheeling or hiking. Carries nicely and protects a lot of the piece. I asked Santa to bring me another one this year for my 6" 28-2.
