I just had an old Bianchi #208 Silent Partner upside down shoulder holster given to me for my m36. It's in pretty good condition generally but the rentention elastic on the holster is about worn out. I would appreciate any useful advice on how to restore it. Thanks in advance.

The only thing I can think of is to (a) take the holster apart, insert new elastic and have it resewn, or (b) have an additional piece of elastic sewed to the outside of the holster, which maybe would not work so well and would look tacky, not that anyone would notice.

Thanks, Robert. You pretty much mirrored my thoughts on how to fix it. Just wanted to run it by the knowledgeable leather benders on here in case there was a way I hadn't thought of.

Performing such a repair will require two things.

First, the type of heavy duty elastic in the proper width, which is available only from a few sources and generally comes in rolls of 100 feet or so, and is rather expensive.

Second, the holster will have to be completely disassembled, the new elastic installed, then the holster will have to be completely reassembled. If the stitching is done on a machine it will be unlikely that every stitch-line and hole will be 100% aligned. If the stitching is done by hand the lines and holes can be matched up, but the work will take much longer.

So, the cost of the elastic will probably be more than the price of a new holster and the work involved will easily be two or three times as much as making a new holster from scratch.

You may find someone willing to take on the job, but they will probably be sorry they did it.

Best regards.

Oh, well, already had an idea that might be the case. I have leatherworking tools and a very modest amount of ability to do some basic operations. Thinking I might try making a leather safety strap with snap. I like the holster but don't want to spend much money on it since I have the requisite large box of holsters collected during my LE days accumulated while searching for that imaginary "ultimate holster." Ray, I appreciate you responding anyway.

I had a Bucheimer Colt Detective Special upside down shoulder holster repaired by a holster maker many years ago who replaced the heavy elastic cloth. It had to be taken apart and sewed back togreather and it came out quite nice and has held up for many years. I didn't ask for it but he added a safety strap which can be removed and I appreciated that feature. Up to you as to how much you want to invest in the holster, I'm sure a custom holster shop would repair it for you.
