Shot a match yesterday, had fun shooting revolver but my holster was lacking. Club R.O. let me run what I brung but I need to know what to look for and where. Rulebook says cover the trigger, not much else. What about the belt, can I use the overbelt? Running a stock 4" model 10-7 right now, plan to stick with K-frame since I'm already set with speedloaders and clips. Thanks for the advice!

There are a couple of ways to go. Since you are not particularly competitive shooting minor in USPSA revolver, I'd get a holster that lets you shoot in Production USPSA and also in IDPA/SSR.

That means simply get any IDPA approved holster.
Comp Tac, Blade Tech, and Safariland are popular.
FOBUS make an OWB that is cheap and legal.
I use this holster: Custom Fit Holster :: HOLSTERS.COM

FYI Comp-Tac doesn't make holsters for K-frame, unfortunately.

What did you mean by " not particularly competitive". Does that refer to my choice of caliber or firearm? Not looking to go national, just like a wheelgun and wanted to have fun, which I did. Under equipped and suck as bad at it as I did, I still had FUN.

Yes, that's basically it. There is little point is getting one of the $125 skeleton competition holsters that are only allowed in USPSA Revolver when you can have as much fun, and also shoot in USPSA Production and IDPA/SSR(where you are competitively equipped), with a $50 IDPA certified Safariland holster--or an even cheaper FOBUS.

I sometimes shoot my K frame with speedloaders IDPA/SSR setup in USPSA Revolver too, but the fact is that the .45 ACP clip guns own USPSA Revolver division.

I'm no USPSA expert, but to expend ever so slightly on what OKFCO5 posted.

The reasons why your choice of caliber and firearm don't compete is, in large part, because the speedloader 38 Special reload more slowly on average and also score minor. The faster moonclips and more favorable major scoring of a S&W 625 make a big difference.

fobus makes a belt holster for a 4" K frame. Works just fine. Found mine on Ebay for about $29. Used mine at the steel challenge in Titusville two years ago. Really fun. Not the fastest, but I didn't miss!

A Fobus for my 4" HB Model 10-7 (purchased from a member of this forum) and 6 speedloaders makes it fun for me at local monthly USPSA matches. And I take 1st place in the revolver division (just me in that division so far).
I shoot in matches for fun......................even though sometimes my scores (not times) are equal or slightly better than the autos if I have a good day.

I'll second the recommendation for a Kydex holster from Blade-Tech. Let me suggest Dropped & Offset Holster w/Tek-Lok :: OWB Belt Holsters :: Blade-Tech Industries. It will be good for USPSA, IDPA, Steel Challange, and Icore. You might have to remove the drop and offset bracket for some of these sports, but it's just a simple matter of removing a few screws.

I also suggest that since you enjoy shooting your revolver, you look into some local ICORE (International confederation of revolver enthusiasts) matches. Someone once described ICORE as USPSA for revolvers. They even have a classification just for someone using a revolver with speed loaders.I like it much better than USPSA since the accuracy requirements are a little tougher. Another advantage is that the course of fire is set up to be 6 round neutral.

For what it is worth, I have been using a DeSantis Speed Scabbards for my M28, M66, M686...one for each size frame in USPSA/IDPA/ICORE matches... They are a strapless OWB holster that covers the trigger guard and place the gun in just the right spot for ME.

Might work well for you as well!

Randy

PS. Not a kydex man for my revolvers........

I had a leather holster made for my N frame 625 which also works for my 686 and 646 by a guy at the Tulsa gun show a few years back. It cost less that $50. I looked for his card but no luck in finding it. You might check in your area to see if anyone makes holsters.
