I know this isnt real gunsmithing but how hard is it to replace the rebound and mainspring of a N frame revolver?

You will probably think it is real gunsmithing when you replace the rebound spring. Be sure you have a manual or an expert mentor. You can destroy the side plate if you don't know how to remove it.

Those are very easy changes to make. The FAQ's have all the information you need. The most important things to remember are proper removal and installation of the side plate. Do not pry it off. Do not use the screws to "pull it down" when reinstalling.

A tip to avoid scratching the gun when removing or reinstalling the cylinder... Open the cylinder and then hold the cylinder in place and slide the yoke out of it and the frame at the same time.

When removing the sideplate screws, do not mix them up. The front screw above the trigger guard that retains the yoke is a fitted screw. I always wrap this screw in a small piece of masking tape so I don't mix them.

It's not hard but it is intimidating. You can also damage the side plate or bung up screws if your not careful.

FWIW, when I did my first one, I got a S&W revolver Smithing DVD ( $15, off Ebay ). I'd highly recommend it. If a picture is worth a thousand words, a video is worth a million. It will guide you through the process and pitfalls while giving you the knowledge and confidence to do it right. Beyond that, get a good screwdriver set and a fine polishing stone or two. ( I use a Lansky knife sharpening stone set.) All in all, the cost of the DVD and tooling can be under $50 and you'll be set up well for the future.

Lastly, a large clear plastic bag is a very handy thing to have on hand when working with springs. I do much of my assembly/disassemble inside the bag to capture small launched parts.
