HomeSmith Tuneup: Whack Job

Was it worth the time?

The original double action pull was just over 10 pounds, and the original single action pull was right on 4 pounds.

With the new springs we now have a double action pull of just under 8 pounds and a single action pull of 3 pounds.

I'll call that one a win. Time to move on to the Wondersight...

The Wondersight is a neat little piece of machinery. It comes with two backing plates, large and small. The directions don't say which one to use for what application, so I did some test fitting and decided to go with the larger of the two.

Remembering my experience with stoning the hammer/trigger shims while I was working on the Rugers, I stoned the contact surface of the backing plate prior to assembling it onto Whack Job. That turned out to be a good idea...there was a pretty good burr around the edge that would have scratched the underlying finish.

Installation is really very simple after cleaning up the backing plate. Put the screw in the hole. Turn it. That's about it.

The high adjustment point gives quite a bit of additional height over the original rear notch. If that doesn't correct the low point of impact it will definitely reduce the amount of filing that has to be done on the front sight.

I wasn't sure if I would like the way the Wondersight looked, but it's growing on me. It has a neat steampunk vibe to it, like something that Allan Quatermain might have carried.

Range report tomorrow night. Same bat time, same bat channel.

So did the Wondersight work?

Yes....yes it did. :D

The vertical adjustments are a bit coarse and not very repeatable, so it isn't something that you want to adjust frequently. It took 8 shots to get it dialed in to hit just on top of the front sight blade at 10 yards.

My only real issue using the revolver now is that so much bluing has worn off of the front sight blade that it is quite shiny on a bright afternoon. That's an easy fix though.

Here is Whack Job by himself and with his brothers. A good day at the range. ;)
